With backyard barbeques and parties in full swing during the summer months, it’s easy to forget about what goes down the drain. But fats, oils, and grease (FOG) don’t just disappear; they build up, creating messy and costly clogs that affect more than just your home’s plumbing.
When FOG makes its way into sewer lines like ours, it hardens and sticks to the inside of pipes, causing blockages, backups, and repairs that impact the whole community.
Here’s how you can help prevent these headaches:
- Never pour FOG down the sink or garbage disposal.
- Before washing, wipe greasy pans with a paper towel.
- For larger amounts, pour FOG into a can, let it cool, and then toss it in the trash.
Preventing FOG-related clogs helps us keep almost 400 miles of sewer pipes running smoothly so they continue to safely collect approximately 190 million gallons of wastewater each day.
So, as you clean up after your summer BBQ, remember: a little care with FOG goes a long way!
